Activity levels for female students at Qassim University

Abstract

It is well established that physical inactivity is associated with excess weight and adverse health outcomes in middle eastern women. The aim of this study is to assess the level of inactivity among female students at al-Qassim University, KSA. Healthy 127 female students from Al-Qassim university participated in this study (Age 20±1 year, Mass 55.63±9.91 kg, Stature 157.18±5.25 cm). Smart wristband bracelet was used to track daily step counts, walking distance, level of activity, amount of sleep, resting heart rate and the daily number of calories burned. There was a significant difference between active and inactive female participants (P<0.005). Active participants steps counts were 3.5 times higher than inactive participants. The level of activity has affected positively the resting heart rate and sleeping hours on active females (p=0.00, sleeping 8.6±2.6 vs 7.6±3.6). For active participants twice the daily calories where burned compared to the inactive participation group (p=0.00). the modernised life in the KSA has had a direct impact of the level of activity among female participants. This study has shown that neither the active or inactive groups that participated in this study reach the minimum daily recommend level of exercise advocated by the WHO.,
